About the HZMB

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), connecting the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in the east and Guangdong Province (Zhuhai City) and the Macao Special Administrative Region in the west, is part of the circular route of the Pearl River Delta Region in the national expressway network planning and a key project crossing the Lingding Sea waters. This work will form a new road transport corridor between the east and west banks of the Pearl River after construction. On October 28 2009, the feasibility study report of the HZMB project was formally approved by the executive meeting of the State Council.

On March 31, 2010, the Ministry of Transport approved the preliminary design of the HZMB. The project mainly consists of three parts: First, the bridge and undersea tunnel project; second, the three ports in Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao; third, the connecting lines of the HZMB with Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao. In particular, the main works of the bridge and undersea tunnel project (the section from the boundary line between Guangdong and Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macao Ports) are jointly constructed by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. The three regions are responsible for constructing the Hong Kong section of the bridge and undersea tunnel project (starting from San Shek Wan, Hong Kong and ending at the boundary line between Guangdong and Hong Kong), the three ports and the connecting lines, respectively. The main works of the bridge and undersea tunnel project lasts about 29.6 kilometers long and adopts the bridge-tunnel combination scheme; the section about 6.7 kilometers long of the HZMB that crosses Lingding West Channel and Tonggu Channel adopts the tunnel scheme; and the bridge scheme is adopted for the rest of the HZMB, around 22.9 kilometers long. In the design of the main works of the bridge and undersea tunnel project, the technical standard for two-way six-lane expressway is adopted, with a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

According to the approval of the Ministry of Transport on the preliminary design of the main works, the total project investment of the main works of the HZMB is RMB48,064 million. Based on the relevant provisions agreed by the governments of the three regions, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority was formally established in July 2010 to organize and implement the construction, operation, maintenance and management of the main works of the HZMB.
